The Third Great Existential Crisis of the ‘American Experiment’
America has only faced a few moments when her survival was truly on the line. Eric Metaxas calls them the three great existential crises.
The first was the American Revolution, when a people risked everything to secure liberty as a God-given trust. The second was the Civil War, when the nation confronted its deep moral fracture and fought for coherence with its founding creed.
Today, we stand in what Metaxas calls the third great crisis—a struggle not of muskets or battalions but of truth, freedom, and spiritual allegiance. It is a crisis over what America is and whether she will remain anchored to the providential vision that birthed her.
This moment is testing our foundations:
➡️ Truth is contested—even reality itself is debated.
➡️ Freedom is pressured—especially conscience and faith.
➡️ National memory is eroding—founding covenants and prayers are forgotten.
➡️ Moral order is cracking—the bedrock of justice and righteousness is unsettled.
➡️ God is pushed to the margins—the nation wrestles with spiritual amnesia.
Yet crisis in Scripture often signals invitation—a summons for God’s people to step into priestly responsibility. As in past turning points, America needs believers who discern the times, intercede with clarity, and call the nation back to its covenant purpose under God.
Our prayer this week: Lord, let this crisis become a path to renewal. Restore America to righteousness and to her founding purpose under You.
