Pray Upstream for Real Results
Pray at the upstream source.
Friday, June 5, 2025
Valued Praying Americans,
America turns 250 this July. And as we approach that birthday, I’m wondering if we're having the wrong conversations. We're obsessed with what's downstream. Politics. Policy. Elections. Leadership. All of it matters of course. But none of it is the source. The source is upstream. Way upstream. And that's where we must take our stance of faith. —Brian
This issue … Upstream from politics is culture. Upstream from culture is worldview. Upstream from worldview is belief and the renewed mind. Pray American DNA means we pray at the source.

Pray Upstream for Real Results
America is divided. Loud in some wrong places.
Turn on the news and you'll find wall-to-wall coverage of politics. Who's winning. Who's losing. What the courts decided. What Congress failed to do. The next pending election.
None of that is the source.
Politics is downstream from culture. Culture is downstream from worldview. Worldview is downstream from belief. And belief, what a people actually trust, worship, and build their lives on, that is the headwaters. That is where everything begins.
John Adams understood this with a clarity most modern Americans have lost. He wrote: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
He wasn't making a religious preference. He was making a structural argument. The whole architecture of American self-governance — the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the balancing of power, the assumption of ordered liberty — was designed for a people whose interior lives were shaped by belief in God and a moral order higher than themselves.
Take that away and the machine doesn't run. It can't. It was never designed to.
George Washington said the same thing in his Farewell Address. He called religion and morality "indispensable supports" to political prosperity. He warned that no one who undermines these pillars can call himself a patriot.
Then he went further: he said even a purely secular politician (someone with no personal faith at all) ought to cherish religion and morality for what they produce in a free society.
This was really consensus understaning among the American Founders.
The question they were answering in 1776 was not just who should govern? It was what kind of people does self-governance require?
Their answer was clear. A people with shared belief. A people shaped by moral conviction. A people who fear God more than they fear government.
America at 250 is not primarily a political crisis. It is a belief crisis. A worldview crisis. A crisis of the headwaters.
And that is precisely where we have both the assignment and the authority to pray.
We don't fix the downstream by fighting harder at the downstream. We go upstream. We pray for belief to be transformed. For worldview to be reformed. For culture to be renewed.
We trust that when the headwaters run clear, what flows from them changes too.
This July 4th, as America marks 250 years, the most patriotic thing the Church can do is not wave a flag. It is to beseech God at the source.

Willing and Obedient The Blessing Is in Motion | Jesus Smart 180, Ep. 374. Obedience to the Lord releases a blessing — but the timing and shape of it will likely surprise you. Isaiah 1:19 makes the promise plain. Willing and obedient hearts eat the good of the land. The blessing often comes later than you think, looks different than you think, and lands better than you think. Minisode: < 3 mins.

Prayer Key — Our Upstream Stance of Faith
Upstream from politics is culture. Upstream from culture is worldview. Upstream from worldview is belief. The founders knew this. We have to be there in revelation and faith.

We can draw on America's founding prayers, covenants, documents, and early experiences as "prayer architecture" for today. Adapt the prayer language below to your prayer voice as the Holy Spirit leads.
🌊 Pray at the Headwaters — Father, forgive us for spending our prayer energy entirely at the downstream. We have prayed about elections and policies and court decisions — and those things matter. But today we come upstream. We pray for the belief of the American people. We ask You to move on hearts. To disrupt false worldviews. To expose the bankruptcy of every substitute god this culture has erected. "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3). Lord, make that word live again in this nation.
🔥 Worldview Reformation — God, we pray for a reformation of worldview. Kingdom worldview. Not just in the Church, but in the culture. In classrooms. In newsrooms. In living rooms. Let the questions people are already asking lead them to You. Let the confusion of this moment become a door. You said "When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him" (Isaiah 59:19). Raise Your standard at the headwaters. Let it flow downstream.
🙏 The Church at the Source — Lord, position Your people upstream. Give the Church courage to stop chasing political solutions to spiritual problems. Raise up voices who speak to belief, to worldview, to the foundations… not just to the news cycle. Let the body of Christ recover its prophetic assignment: to shape culture, not merely to react to it. "You are the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13). Let us function where salt is most needed. At the source.
🎆 America at 250 — Father, as this nation approaches its 250th birthday, we pray with honesty and hope. We are divided. We are confused. We have lost the thread. But You have not lost us. You are the God who restores. Who rebuilds. Who returns the hearts of children to their fathers. We ask for a movement of Your Spirit that begins in belief and works its way downstream — transforming worldview, renewing culture, and yes, eventually, reforming our political life. Not because politics is ultimate, but because a transformed people produce a transformed nation. Do it again, Lord. Do it from the headwaters down.
🛡️ Sovereign protection of our leaders. Father, we invoke your hand of protection over leaders in our nation. Foil the plans of lawlessness.
As you pray, tune in to the Father’s heart. Resonate with the sharp prayer edges he surfaces in the Spirit. Leave “white space” in prayer for fresh prayer themes improvisation.
