War of 1812, Fort McHenry

In the War of 1812, a 25-hour bombardment by the British Navy on Fort McHenry failed.

“By the Dawn’s Early Light”—A Banner Yet Waves

During the War of 1812, British warships unleashed a relentless 25-hour bombardment on Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor in September of 1814.

The British Navy unleashed 32-pound cannons, exploding mortars, and rockets on Fort McHenry. But the fort held. By dawn, the British turned back.

Francis Scott Key watched the battle through the night from a ship.

When the smoke cleared and dawn broke, he saw it—the massive American flag still waving.

Moved to the core, Key penned words that would become our national anthem.

First stanza—
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there …

Key's response was worship and praise in the 4th stanza …

Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto—“In God is our trust…”

Today, we too are watchers on the water. As culture rages and institutions shake, we lift our eyes to the dawn and raise a sound of intercession.

God raises a standard through those who watch and pray.

Even when we feel sidelined or silenced, our prayers matter. Prayer preserves things. The banner still waves.

“We will shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God.” (Psalm 20:5)

Business-like. “Mind how you pray. Make real business of it. Let it never be a dead formality … plead the promise in a truthful, business-like way … Ask for what you want, because the Lord has promised it. Believe that you have the blessing, and go forth to your work in full assurance of it.” — C.H. Spurgeon

Pray American DNA

Each generation needs to rediscover America’s DNA.

Each generation needs to rediscover America’s DNA.

We can draw on America's founding prayers, covenants, documents, and early experiences as "prayer architecture" for today. Adapt the prayer language below to your prayer voice as the Holy Spirit leads.

A Banner Yet Waves

🌅 Until the light breaks again. Lord of the Angel Armies (Lord of Hosts), just as You preserved Fort McHenry under fire, preserve this nation now. When the enemy bombards our foundations, raise up a remnant who will stand in faith and intercession. In the dark watches of the night, may we hold the line in prayer until the light breaks again.

🛡️🗽 Unreasonable and wicked. "That we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith" (Paul in 2 Thessalonians 3.2 NKJV). Jesus, our Deliverer, protect America from those who hate truth, twist justice, and seek to tear down what You have designed and ordained.

🛡️ Continued protection over the month of July. Lord, we ask for Your providential hand over July across our nation. Expose every hidden threat. Suppress every plan of violence,

⭐️ Texas. (On Independence Day, a devastating flood hit an all-girls Christian camp in Texas. 69 deaths have been confirmed, but some are predicting a final number of more than 100.) Lord, we pray for the families and communities affected by this terrible flood. Draw all in Texas closer to you. Source: Intercessors for America.

🦅 As you pray, tune in to the Father’s heart. Watch for the sharp prayer edges He brings to the surface in the Spirit. Leave “white space” in prayer for improvisation.

HR is lonely. It doesn’t have to be.

The best HR advice comes from those in the trenches. That’s what this is: real-world HR insights delivered in a newsletter from Hebba Youssef, a Chief People Officer who’s been there. Practical, real strategies with a dash of humor. Because HR shouldn’t be thankless—and you shouldn’t be alone in it.
