America, the ‘City on a Hill’ lives!
Jonathan Edwards was a key player in the First Great Awakening (1730s-1740s). He saw America as part of God’s unfurling design. See last week’s newsletter.
In A History of the Work of Redemption, he spoke of the spiritual awakenings in the colonies as more than just revivals—they were moments in a greater God Story, shaping the soul of a new society.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5.14 NKJV).
Jesus was speaking of his followers, what would be the Ekklesia, the Church.
John Winthrop first used the phrase to describe a settlement in colonial America. Edwards, too, used the phrase, believing that revived American colonies had a special role in God’s purposes.
They both echoed the idea of a “city on a hill,” a vision of a new society meant to model righteousness and justice.
We celebrate America’s 250th birthday in 2026. This vision matters more than ever. If we desire to flourish as a people, we must renew our commitment … realigning with American DNA.
Is it time for another awakening that restores our national foundations? I say yes. Do you?
We quest to live with that expectation of living in the the story God is still writing for America.

🗝️ Kingdom prayer key
It’s always been about a union, a partnership between heaven and earth … from the Garden of Eden to the Garden City which is coming down from above in the New Heavens and New Earth.
And prayer is a core element of our union and partnership with the Creator. See this for your personal life too!
The American ‘city on a hill’ today
As we think about Jonathan Edwards' vision of America as a "city on a hill," let’s remember that our nation’s spiritual awakening is part of the bigger God Story.
🦅 Jesus, you said your followers are a “City on a hill”. As your followers in America, we fully embrace this identity—a city on a hill within the nation. Cause the AMERICAN CITY ON A HILL to shape and steer the nation as Kingdom Salt and Light. 📖”You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5.14 NKJV).
🦅 We ask for new SOCIETAL EXPRESSIONS modeling your righteousness and justice to the world—the righteousness which comes from Christ. 📖"Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream" (Amos 5.24 ESV).
🦅 All-powerful God, we ask for your hand in ensuring GODLY SUCCESS IN ESTABLISHING THE NEW ADMINISTRATION in Washington. 📖“He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning” (Daniel 2.21 NIV).
🦅 Lord over the nations, we pray for TRUE AND LASTING PEACE IN UKRAINE. May both Ukraine and Russia be able to work with the U.S. to bring an end to the bloodshed. Give our leaders wisdom. May we not become bogged down in this conflict, draining our national energy and resources. 📖“He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire” (Psalm 46.9 NASB).
Let’s agree as one!
We can draw on America's founding prayers, covenants, documents, and early experiences as "prayer architecture" for today. Adapt the prayer language below to your prayer voice as the Holy Spirit leads.
