1776 Christmas miracle: Washington’s faith move that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War
On Christmas night in 1776, General George Washington and about 2,400 Continental Army soldiers crossed the icy Delaware River in a daring operation that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War.
The goal was to launch a surprise assault on the Hessian forces (German mercenaries fighting for the British) stationed in Trenton, New Jersey.
A storm brought freezing rain, snow, and terrifying winds. It was a daring and pivotal maneuver.
The Delaware was less than 300 yards at the point of crossing. The Hessians, caught off guard and unprepared after Christmas celebrations, were quickly overwhelmed in the early morning of the 26th.
This win boosted morale and revitalized the American cause after months of disappointing setbacks. The victory at Trenton was soon followed by another win at Princeton.
Washington's courageous leadership was infused with a deep sense of faith. He regularly called for days of prayer and fasting, believing the revolution’s success was tied to divine providence. He trusted in a Higher Design guiding the effort.
The event reminds us that bold action, fueled by faith and vision, can lead to breakthroughs even in the darkest moments. We can trust in God’s overarching plan for America and for our personal lives.
